Whale SharksRhincondon typus, the whale shark, is normally a rare site in the Caribbean. Many adventurers travel around the world to Australia or Thailand in the hope of seeing this most amazing of creatures. What most scuba divers don’t realize is that the whale shark live in the banks, lying north of Utila. These colossal fish, largest in the world, grow to sizes of over 15mteres. The largest whale shark frequenting the waters around Utila, Old Tom, is estimated to be 17metres long. Imagine getting ready to dive and seeing a shadow larger than your boat. Scarey; fortunately for scuba divers, these massive fish are veggies. Please note, whale sharks are seen year round but for the best chance of seeing one, we recommend timing your visit during the most active months of March to May and August to October. If you would like a more personal encounter with the whale shark, we can organize whale shark trips using one of our speed boats and our qualified boat captains. More images:whaleshark |
