Slovenia is a country of just 2 million inhabitants blessed with natural beauty and variety that is almost unbelievable for such a tiny country. Part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries, and then more recently part of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia managed a smooth and painless transition into the post-communist era. This can, in great degree, be put down to the high levels of education, national pride and basic decency of her people who look towards the West but retain an unmistakable Eastern chic and a keen sense of who they are. Slovenia gained full EU membership in 2004 and has become more and more popular with visitors and investors alike. 'Small but perfectly formed' like the country itself, Ljubliana is the picture-perfect medieval capital city of a country rightly proud of the history, heritage and above all the natural beauty that awaits adventurous visitors to her mountains, lakes, valleys and forests.
Nightlife
Ljubjlana’s Old Town offers a wide choice of bars which are always bustling. There are a lot of new start-up venues as young locals continue to make their mark on the growing cafe culture of Ljubliana. Slovenians love to dress up and go out but there is not a hint of snobbishness or 'localism' - and everyone speaks English!
The Orto Bar is a very friendly place, with a good vibe, great cocktails. It’s an alternative place, in terms of music and people, although so is Slovenia!
More mainstream and in an ideal central location, Baccus offers a fine restaurant, bar and nightclub all in one large converted period building. Watch out or you could spend 8 hours in here without ever feeling the need to leave!
Global is another fantastic place in the centre of Ljubljana, located on the top of a department store in the city centre. After 9pm the bar turns into a nightclub and you have to pay to get in and (and dress up a bit). It has awesome views of the castle and old town from its outdoor terrace and one of the best atmospheres of any club we have ever been too - bold words but go there and you'll see what we mean! Access is from street level via an elevator which opens directly into the club which adds to the fun.
Another good venue, Club Lipa, is found out of town (take a taxi), where international and local DJs play all night. As ever, the BoardnLodge and BikenLodge teams are locals, which means that they will make sure to point you in the direction of a night out that is right for you.
